My spiritual life was sustained by ongoing recovery meetings as well as the church Mom had introduced me to. Although it was an hour away from Inkster, many Sundays I’d go get Troi, buckle her up in the backseat, and, once I was seated in the sanctuary, hold her in my lap while I took in the messages of hope.

I had spiritual aspirations. I also had career aspirations. But I never connected the two. Back then, I didn’t understand that spirit is connected to everything. I was amazed to see how that worked out on a practical level.
